1. Time of gestation

Knowing when conception occurred is necessary to determine the number of days you are pregnant and to determine the approximate time of delivery. On average, the gestation period of bitches lasts between 59 and 65 days , increasing the chances from day 62. This will depend on the breed in question and your age.

2. Body temperature

About 12 hours before birth, the body temperature of the dog goes down by a few degrees. Usually it is at 38ºC. You can measure the temperature of your dog with a rectal thermometer, which you can use when the dog enters the last week of gestation.

Consult your veterinarian on how to do this, but if you notice that bother the bitch it is best to give up measuring the temperature, to remain calm. If the temperature rises to more than 38 degrees and presents other symptoms, such as fever or malaise, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

3. Nervousness

The bitch’s agitation is normal when there is little time to give birth. This will make you try to get away from unfamiliar people , especially those who do not have much confidence with her, as well as avoid contact with other pets at home. In addition, this nervousness will prevent feeling good about yourself, so you will notice agitation, whether you are standing still, sitting or lying down.

4. Owner’s company

Despite this nervousness, the bitch seeks the company of her owner , the person with whom she has the most confidence and with whom she feels the safest. Because of this, a few days after childbirth will want to be enough with you, asking for attention and care.

This does not mean that you should intervene when you give birth, unless it is necessary. Follow it during the part to feel safe, but should only provide you with help if any complicationsoccur .

5. Choice of the nest

Choosing a nest, a place to give birth and raise the young, is extremely important to the expectant mother. So you’ll start looking for a cozy place and a little hidden where you feel protected, or spend even more time on your own bed.

It is usually best to respect the bitch’s decision about where to nest, as long as this does not pose a risk to her and the pups. Put in the space a comfortable bed for them and blankets to stay warm and comfortable.

Childbirth will occur in this nest , either lying on the side or squatting, which seems more comfortable for the puppies to be born.

6. Appetite

Many bitches lose their appetite between 12 and 24 hours before giving birth , so this is an easy sign to detect. However, it does not always occur, and others may even feed while giving birth, between one puppy and another.

7. Cleaning

Hours before delivery the bitch will begin to constantly lick her genitals , both to clear the area and to relieve the pain she feels. In the same way, this helps in the expulsion of the puppies.

8. Mucosidades

As with humans, the dog expels the mucus plug hours before delivery , which serves to protect the uterus and pups from bacteria and infections during pregnancy.

This is yellow or white in color, and may come accompanied by a little vaginal discharge. From this moment, it takes a maximum of 12 hours to deliver.

9. Contractions

They are the last symptom and indicate that the time of delivery is imminent . You can see rhythmic and repetitive movements of the belly, which can be seen especially if it is on the side. It is normal for this phase to have some pain.
