Causes of bovine mastitis
Mastitis is a multifactorial disease, since the infection depends on the germs, the environmental conditions, and the characteristics of the cow. The microorganisms invade the breast tissue causing inflammation of the gland. We can classify mastitis in:
Contagious mastitis : originated by microorganisms that live in the mammary gland ( Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus mainly). They are transmitted during the milking of the cow through contaminated milking machinery, by the calf or by the incorrect manipulation of the workers ( dirty cloths, do not wear gloves, etc.) They cause a decrease in the amount of milk.
Environmental mastitis : originated by microorganisms ( environmental streptococci and coliforms ) that live in the environment, and are transmitted between milking and in the dry period when the gland does not produce milk. Their presence helps determine the level of contamination of the farm.
Symptoms of Bovine Mastitis
Depending on the symptomatology, the mastitis can be classified mainly in:
Subclinical mastitis : is more difficult to detect than the others. Although no changes are observed in either the milk or the udder, the microorganism and somatic cell counts are high.
Clinical Mastitis : Inflammation of the affected udder is observed, and the animal feels pain when touched in this region. The milk is altered with the presence of scales, clots, discolored serum, and blood.
Acute mastitis : puts the animal’s life at risk. There are also generalized signs such as fever, less milk production or loss of appetite.
Diagnosis of bovine mastitis
In addition to assessing the symptomatology of the cow, milk samples are collected and the following tests may be performed to diagnose mastitis in the cow:
- Somatic cell count : a high number of somatic cells is associated with reduced milk production (more than 200,000 cells / ml indicates subclinical mastitis.
- Culture of milk bacteria : microorganisms causing inflammation of the gland (more than 50,000 bacteria / ml may indicate the source of the contamination).
- California Mastitis Test : indicates the number of somatic cells of the elite that has collected as a toothpick.
- Other tests.
Treatment of bovine mastitis
You should know that prevention works best and is more effective than the treatment you can do. Treatment will depend on the causative microorganism and whether it is subclinical or clinical, using antimicrobial route intramammary, the veterinarian will inform about the following treatment to remedy the cow’s mastitis.
Prevention of bovine mastitis
Prevention is the key to controlling this disease, and even more important than treatment. Here is a list of preventive measures to prevent contagious mastitis :
Disinfection of teats before and after milking
- Milking the infected cows at the end
- Good hygiene during milking
- Good condition of the milking machine
- Drying treatment
- Discard cows with chronic mastitis
With regard to the preventive measures to be taken to reduce the appearance of mastitis of environmental origin, we have the following:
- Good food and water
- Good quality milk
