Basset Hound

The basset hound belongs to the group of beagles and comes from Saint Hubert (France) where a noble hunting fan chose this breed for his private hunting trips. The fashion spread all over the country until arriving in Great Britain. Once in England, the breeding of these dogs continued, eventually adopting an English origin.

Physical appearance

The most significant attribute of a basset hound is its physical aspect, very striking and original which, combined with its sad aspect, makes the dog adorable. The body of this dog is long and thick in proportion to its very short legs.

The head is large and is covered in wrinkles on the forehead and eyes. It should be noted that it still has a large double chin and upper lips that fall loosely over the lower ones, making the latter not visible. His long ears fall around his face.

In spite of its small size, it is a robust dog that measures between 33 and 38 centimeters to the shoulder, weighing between 35 and 40 kilograms of weight. This ends up forming a somewhat disproportionate but not unpleasant physique.

Regarding the colors of the coat, we should point out that each specimen has a unique color and different from the rest of its brothers, although they may be very similar. Usually, they have a tricolor combination that includes white, black and fire, but we can also find examples of white and brown color. Your hair is short and hard.

Personality

The basset hound is a friendly, fun and good-humored dog , which does not match his sad and lonely appearance. He is very familiar and loves to enjoy games, trips and excursions with his family.

It is a race that, like many others, despises the solitude and the lack of contact with those that considers its family. So it’s no wonder he follows us around the house during the day and accepts the presence of other pets in the home, preferably of the same breed.

It fits well with any family nucleus, including couples, families and children. The tutor should always provide distractions like miscellaneous toys so that he has “things to do”.

Behavior

In general, we speak of a race that accepts the company of the little ones and tolerates their antics in a patient way. Still, it is important that the tutor educate the children not to pull their long ears, thus avoiding any negative reaction from their pet. The games between them will be active and fun. If your goal is to share the dog with your whole family, it is guaranteed that you will enjoy a very special animal.

Even though it is a hunting dog, the basset hound can have an excellent relationship with other pets inside the home. If socialized correctly, your new puppy can become friendly with whoever you want.

Care

By observing their physical characteristics, we can see that with their elongated body and high weight, it is easy for the dog to gain back pain. You can easily detect this problem by noting if it avoids climbing stairs or not. If you see that he hesitates or refuses to do so, you should consult the veterinarian as soon as possible.

Provide enough and varied toys and teethers to divert your crawling instinct that can result in occasional destruction during your learning and growth. If you spend a lot of time away from home, you may want to consider another pet as the basset hound does not tolerate solitude particularly well.

It should encourage and keep your muscles healthy because this is a dog that tends to gain weight easily. For this reason we recommend long long walks with breaks whenever he wishes.

It should be brushed with a certain regularity (2 or 3 times a week) to keep your hair beautiful and shiny. You should take a bath once a month and take care of your babas and pamphlets whenever necessary.

Cheers

You may have genetic or hereditary problems throughout your life, as the continuous crosses between relatives of this breed increase the likelihood of suffering from complicated health problems such as hip dysplasia, among others. Prevent it from getting on the couch, people, or other surfaces to prevent a herniated disc.

The basset hound can also suffer from glaucoma or conjunctivitis if their basic needs and care are not controlled. Even if he does not make it, he’s a delicate dog. Control your food so it does not include too much fat.

Education

Although one is talking about a moderately intelligent dog, his predisposition to please his family will make him less stubborn and stubborn than he usually appears. With the positive reinforcement , correct physical activity and much affection on the part of its tutors, we can affirm that the education of a basset hound is not complicated.
