Parathyroid cat syndrome
We have always seen cats as great balancers, agile, quick and very astute, so much so that we say they have 7 lives. But the truth is that their strategies do not always go well, they make miscalculations, impulses difficult to control, among other factors, and sometimes escape, persecution or play ends up wrong and in accidents.

Cat Spraying No More is an excellent opportunity for the cat owners to learn about training the cat with a systematic approach. It helps in preventing the unwanted litter issues and other risks of bad feline behavior as well.
Did you know that there is a syndrome in felines known as the parachute cat syndrome? A priori may sound funny, but it is a problem that should concern the owners of domestic cats, especially if they live in tall buildings precisely because of these natural mistakes they can make.
Keep reading this new article from YourCatCareguide to find out what the parachute cat syndrome is all about and how to act if that happens.
What is Parachute Cat Syndrome?
This syndrome, also known as the flying cat syndrome, is the most common cat-related domestic accident , but the falls from great heights happen much more than we can think.
It may be that our cat chases another, an insect or a bird and decides to jump out of the window to go after his goal and at that moment our cat is acting as what we know as flying cat or parachute syndrome.
We often see them falling with grace, as if they do not cost them the least effort, because this is a low height, or, in cases of greater height they leave us open-mouthed when they make a turn in the air that allows them to fall from way to cushion the fall and run away. It is precisely at an intermediate height, that is, a height too high to fall smoothly with a simple and too low jump to be able to make the turn and to fall with the legs down, or when it is of an extremely high height and by a lot that can get in position the impact is too strong when our cat is in danger.
This syndrome occurs when the feline leaps decidedly, but in a way that ignores the set of real variables, a jump from an inadequate height to be able to perform correctly and the result varies depending on that height and the physical state of the animal.
Are cats more prone than others?
One fact that is known for sure that does not affect the propensity of the parachute cat syndrome is the fact of the sexual gender of the cat. On the other hand, it can affect the fact that the cat is castrated or not , since if it is not, it is very common for them to control the sexual impulse that always leads them to run away from home and one option is the window or porch.
Another fact is the age, since when younger more curiosity and inexperience I fear cat. In addition, in full adolescence is when the sex drive that was mentioned earlier is higher.
In the case of the kittens of a few months also there is a clear propensity, because the inexperience is very high and still they are learning and knowing the world. Part of the process of learning a kitten is to learn how to measure distances, hence the funny videos that circulate on the internet of small, lopsided felines that fall trying to reach places that are farther than they seemed. Precisely, as they are not aware of the distance from their window or balcony to the nearest floor or surface, they trust and jump, sometimes falling ill.
In addition, it is possible that a kitten that does not have a normal learning process does not get to learn many things about being a cat and in these cases, although the cat is older, it will never act feline and if one of the things affected in its learning were the distances, this cat will have more possibility to fall from the balcony or window.
The good thing about all this is that there are several ways to prevent this from happening, regardless of how our cat is. Later in this article we discuss the most effective forms of prevention.
With action and first aid
When we detect that a cat has had a big fall, we should approach to evaluate the possible damages. It is essential that if the animal does not stand up by itself, do not pick it up or move it immediately afterwards, it should call the veterinary emergency to indicate the best to do, depending on the state of the animal, how to handle it to be able to carry or what will be the best option.
If the fall has been from an intermediate height, it is quite likely that no external injuries will be seen and even if the cat rises alone. Even so, the most recommended is always to go to the vet immediately , since it is very easy to have internal wounds and these can range from mild to very serious. You might notice only a slight limp but you should pick it up and take it for a thorough review as it may have broken one for or have internal wounds that should be treated immediately.
If the fall has caused external wounds, it will depend on the severity of the wounds and the general state of the cat that it is necessary to do something ourselves or not. We must think that in falls of cats with parachute syndrome the wounds are usually hospitalized, especially the rupture of the jaw and the front paws, followed by ruptures in the thorax and abdomen.
Another result in these cases is death, which usually happens when the fall happens from a height of very high floors, whether it is instantaneous or at the end of some time due to the internal wounds.
Due to the variety of possible results, the first aid we can offer ourselves is very limited , the most relevant being immediate observation, the call to the emergency room and following in their footsteps, and taking the cat injured or apparently unharmed to the nearest veterinarian .
The life of our faithful feline friend will often depend on whether or not we are able to follow these simple steps as quickly as possible.

Prevention for the parachute cat syndrome
As discussed earlier, there are many ways to avoid these accidents. For example, starting by castrating our cat or cat and thus greatly decreasing the likelihood that you feel the need to run away from home.
Another very simple and logical way is to avoid access to the windows and balconies, but if you can not or want, at least you can avoid leaving these parts of the house. We must properly place the grids and mosquito nets and so our cats can not go out there, but they can look and kill curiosity as they like.
Another idea is to make sure you enrich your surroundings enough in the house so you do not try to run away from home in search of food or fun. It can provide interactive games for cats, search for food in various parts of the house, if possible that there is one more cat to always feel accompanied, scratchers at different levels and various toys with circuits, shelves, etc.
