What can cause dehydration?

It is sometimes difficult to realize the dehydration in a cat, since the symptoms may be subtle and may go unnoticed. That being the case, it is important to know what you can do if your cat suffers from dehydration , to be more attentive and take action on time.

There are some diseases that cause this condition, such as diarrhea , vomiting, fever , internal bleeding, urine problems, burns or sunstroke , among others.

If our cat suffers from any of these problems we should closely monitor the symptoms of dehydration and call the veterinarian if necessary as well as make sure we provide you with drinking water.

Check your gums

Moisture and the capillary refill test are the two methods for knowing if a cat is dehydrated. To check the humidity of the gum, you should touch it with your finger and gently. Raise your upper lip and do it quickly, since it takes too long to simply dry out due to air.

If the gums are viscous it may be that your cat is in the first stage of dehydration. If they are totally dry it can mean that your kitten has severe dehydration.

The capillary refill test consists of measuring how long the capillaries of the gums take to fill with blood again. To do this, press the gum so that it turns white and observe how long it takes to regain normal color. In a hydrated cat this will take two seconds. The longer the gums take to get pink, the more dehydrated your cat will be. This is because dehydration reduces blood volume, so the body has more difficulty filling the capillaries.

Check the elasticity of your skin

The cat’s skin will lose elasticity and will be drier if it is not well hydrated, so if you want to know if your cat is dehydrated, you can check how long the skin takes to return to the place after it is stretched .

To do this, gently pull the skin off your cat’s loin and pull it up slightly, as if separating it from the body. In a well-hydrated cat the skin will return to its normal state soon after, whereas if the cat is dehydrated it will take a little more.

This test is only valid for cats with normal weight, without dermatological problems and that are not very old, because with age the skin loses elasticity.

Check the eyes

The eyes can give a lot of information about whether a cat is dehydrated or not. The lack of fluid causes the eyes to become more sunken than normal; in addition, they will be very dry and, in cases of severe dehydration, the third eyelid may be visible.

Check your body temperature and heart rate

When a cat is dehydrated your heart works faster , so your heart rate will be higher. In addition, this affects your body temperature, which may be lower than normal.

You can take your cat’s paw and feel its temperature. If it has the same temperature as always, you do not have to worry, but if you notice that they are colder than normal, you may be dehydrated.
