This post is a very quick overview of the basics of homeopathy. For more information, see the resources at the bottom of this article.

What Is Homeopathy?

It’s a system of healing that stimulates your body to heal itself by strengthening your body’s natural defenses.

Allopathic (mainstream) medicine sees symptoms of a disease as problems that have to be corrected or suppressed. Homeopathy, on the other hand, see the same symptoms as your body’s attempt to heal itself. Instead of suppressing the symptoms, a homeopathic practitioner chooses a remedy which would produce the same symptoms in a healthy individual. This principle, “like cures like” is the basis of homeopathy.

In homeopathy, all symptoms are considered important, not just the ones related to a certain condition.

What You Need To Know

There’s a big difference between palliation of symptoms, suppression of symptoms, and actually curing the underlying problem. Symptoms of an illness are not the illness itself, but they show how your body is responding to the disease. Making your symptoms go away with medication isn’t the same as actually curing your disease.

Palliation means that your symptoms go away quickly. But if you stop taking the medication, the symptoms come back again. Often you’ll need to take a larger dose of the med to get relief from your symptoms. Sometimes you’ll develop other symptoms because the underlying problem has not been dealt with.

Suppression is when the symptom is no longer present. It may not ever return, but since the original condition still exists, more serious symptoms can occur. An example would be treating your cat for a skin inflammation with an anti-inflammatory medication. The skin problem is cleared up, but later on your cat may develop inflammatory bowel disease. Traditional western medicine wouldn’t see these problems as being related, but a homeopath understands that the original inflammation was pushed deeper into your cat’s body by suppressing the original symptoms, not by curing the disease.

When a disease is really cured, the symptoms go away and don’t come back in any form. This is not a fast process, like antibiotic treatment, and your kitty may show other symptoms while he’s undergoing homeopathic treatment. But once cured, he’ll be the same healthy, active cat you had before.

How Does The Homeopath Know Which Remedy To Use?

This is a good question, as there are thousands of homeopathic remedies. The answer is “individualization.” The homeopathic practioner will spend a lot of time asking about symptoms. He or she needs to know about all symptoms experienced, even if they don’t seem to be related to the current condition. Then the practitioner can choose the best remedy for the individual.

Do Homeopathic Remedies Work?

Many people have used homeopathic remedies with great success. Your cat may make a miraculous recovery, or it may take longer. If he’s been sick for a while, it can take several weeks for the healing process to occur.

If he shows very little or no improvement, he may need a different remedy.

Are Homeopathic Remedies Safe?

Yes. There are no chemical or drugs in the remedies, so there aren’t any side effects.
