Origin of shar pei

The shar pei is a dog of Asian origin. It is estimated that he was born in the South China Seaduring the Hang Dynasty and that his ancestors are the Tibetan mastiff and the chow chow. It is believed that it is one of the oldest Chinese races that exist and some speculate that dates from the year 200 BC There are also beliefs of a possible Tibetan origin.

During a good part of its existence, it was basically used as watchdog, dog of fights, hunting dog and like shepherd dog because it is a very intelligent animal . He had no problem adapting to the different tasks entrusted to him.

During the twentieth century, the shar pei was losing popularity, I want the wars and hunger that haunted the country. Finally, in 1940, the state decreed that dogs were considered a luxury and should be used as food for the hungry population to survive. This was the beginning of Yulin, the controversial dog meat festival that began to popularize in the 1990s.

The breed was saved thanks to a small group of people who decided to export the shar pei to other countries during the year 1960, the United States being the country where most of the specimens were.

Characteristics of shar pei

The shar pei is recognized as an official breed and belongs to group II of the FCI: bulldog molosso type dog . There are several blood strains of shar pei, although the most popular are undoubtedly the American and the so-called “traditional”, of Chinese origin.

It is a medium-sized dog , compact and robust . Measure about 44-51 centimeters to the cross, size that may vary depending on sex: males are generally larger than females. On the other hand, its weight is around 18-30 kilograms, we are talking about a medium-sized dog.

His most well-known physical feature is his wrinkly and slightly greasy skin shape , something that greatly benefited him in his dog-fighting season. Other features are the small ears, the dark eyes and the round tail. There are shar pei of all colors: blue, gray, white, beige …

Personality of shar pei

The shar pei has a peculiar temperament: on the one hand we find a calm, quiet and very loyal dog , affectionate with his relatives, who cares, respects and protects everything. He is, in general, a relaxed and obedient dog.

On the other hand, the shar pei is a somewhat independent dog , not needing the constant attention that other dog breeds require. This is an important factor to take into account. However, you should know that any dog, regardless of race, can develop one personality or another.

Care of shar pei

To begin with, we must emphasize that this dog needs a rich and quality food, if possible based on fish and rice, which is due to his very sensitive stomach and propensity to suffer allergies . Fish and rice rations provide higher digestibility.

On the other hand, you should know that it is not good to bathe your shar pei excessively: at most, you should bathe every month and a half . This is because water and soap eliminate the body’s fat cover, which serves to isolate and protect the dog. Be alert and dry the dog thoroughly , after bathing or a rainy ride this is very important to prevent the appearance of fungi. Look closely at the space hidden between wrinkles, where fungi usually attack more.

Although the shar pei is very grateful for the heat provided by the sun, you should take precaution to prevent it from burning. Likewise, it is convenient to protect the dog from the cold properly with coats.

Diseases of shar pei

The shar pei has a very peculiar coat known as horse coat , since it is short close to the body. It also has a thicker layer of fat than other breeds. These details, added to the furrows that cause the folds, favor the appearance of fungi and other problems related to the skin of the shar pei .

The dryness , dermatitis or Entropion (skin that forms on the upper and lower eyelids of the animal) diseases are also related wrinkles that may affect the dog.

Another well-known disease that affects this breed is the shar pei fever . Regularly watching your health and visiting the veterinarian at home 6 months are good ways to prevent these problems. It is also indispensable to have the vaccination of the dog updated, as well as the internal and external worming.

Education and training of shar pei

The shar pei is a smart dog , although in some situations it may be a little stubborn. You must actively work on your education and training to form a sociable and kind dog:

During your puppy phase, you should practice socializing , a step where you should show your dog shar pei different types of people, animals and objects. The goal of this phase is to enrich the knowledge of the dog’s environment to ensure a sociable, caring and respectful attitude, preventing fears or aggression in the future.

On the other hand, your intelligence will be a great help in your training phase. The tutor should be able to teach the basic training commands such as: sit, lie down, be quiet, come … They are indispensable elements for your safety and to obey, as well as helping to create a stronger emotional bond with the dog.

You should never use physical punishment with this dog. All your education should be based on positive reinforcement , always. Once you learn the basics, you can teach your shar pei to do more fun or difficult tricks, and even start it in agility .

Devoting time, patience and affection to the education and training of the shar pei dog is fundamental and very important. In the same way, you should keep a constant in your routine and day to day that will allow him to feel confident.
