Origin of Terra-nova

the origin of the New-Earth dog is located on the island of Newfoundland , Canada in Portuguese as “Terra Nova”. It is believed that the breed developed from the island’s native dogs and from the dogs that imported the ancient Vikings, such as the “black bear dog”, from the year 1,100.

Later, in 1610 and during the colonization of the island, new breeds of dogs arrived in Newfoundland, mainly by the hands of the European fishermen. From then on, and although the Newfoundland already had some standardized characteristics, we begin to try new crossings that culminate in the formation and reinvigoration of the race, giving place to the modern Newfoundland, which we know today.

The New-Earth dog, thanks to its characteristics, was able to withstand the intense climate of the island, work at sea, carry large loads (nets, lines and sledges) or work as rescue dogs. Terra Nova is still an excellent rescue dog and is considered one of the most beautiful and hard-working races in history.

Physical characteristics of Terra Nova

The New-Earth is a giant, powerful and massive dog . It is longer than tall (rectangular body profile), but compact body. The top line is straight from the withers to the club, and has a broad and strong loin. The chest is broad, deep, and spacious, and the belly is not retracted. The tail is long and should never be curled or bent between the hind legs. The fingers have an interdigital membrane.

The head of this dog is massive, broad and with well developed occipital. The naso-frontal depression is well marked, but not abrupt as in the São Bernardo. The nose is brown in brown dogs and black in other colors. The muzzle is square and moderately short. The eyes are moderately sunken, well separated and without third eyelid. The ears are small, triangular and the ends are rounded.

The New-Earth hair is double layered. The inner layer is dense and smooth. The outer layer is long smooth, except on the head, ears and muzzle is where it is shorter. It can be black, white and black, or brown . The International Cynological Federation (FCI) recognizes a very similar breed called the Landseer which is white and black in color. Other organizations do not recognize this breed and consider that the Landseers are simply Terra-nova black and white.

The measures and the approximate weight of Newfoundlands dog are:

  • Males: height to the withers 71 centimeters and 68 kilograms of weight
  • Females: height up to the withers of 66 centimeters and 54 kilograms of weight

Newfoundland Personality

Despite its imposing size, Newfoundland is a particularly affectionate and affectionate dog , very sociable and quiet. He is not overly playful, although he adores water, being able to spend several hours in it. In addition to being sociable with adults, Newfoundland has an incredible tolerance for dealing with other animals and is very patient with children, whom he adores and treats with great delicacy.

The FCI describes Newfoundland as a dog that reflects kindness and sweetness, a cheerful and creative dog, serene and gentle.

Care of the New Earth

The maintenance of the Newfoundlands of requires a moderate effort over the year, although the daily brushing is required. However, in the annual molting season you may need a greater effort as you lose a lot of hair. The bath can be given every two months approximately.

Terra-nova is not especially active, but it is important that you exercise moderately so you do not become overweight. It is recommended to take three daily walks and regularly look for parks or woods where you can play and do some activities. No doubt the best place for the New Earth will be where there is a beach or a lake. If we do not dedicate time to our New Earth, due to its quiet character, we can observe frustration in the dog and a significant increase of the weight .

It is important to note that this dog will need large amounts of food throughout his life. Remember that your weight is between 54 and 68 kilograms, so we need around 500 grams of feed per day, depending on the food or the dog’s exact weight.

Do not forget that Newfoundland tend to drool a lot and when they drink water they water everything, so they are not the most suitable dogs for people with anxiety for cleanings. Large houses with garden are recommended so that the dog can enter and leave while exercising at the same time.

Education of Terra Nova

The Newfoundland is a very intelligent dog and although it is not especially suitable for working dog skills, the truth is that it is an excellent water rescue dog, in fact it is the most popular. He loves to swim, so it is a breed widely used as a water rescue dog, especially in cold waters where other breeds of dogs would be at a greater risk of suffering hypothermia. It responds very well to canine training done with positive reinforcement, as long as the owner is aware of the limitations and virtues that this breed possesses.

Although it is a particularly sociable breed, what is certain is that it will be very important to separate your puppy’s Terra-nova puppy and his siblings at the correct age and to take time to socialize the puppy after adoption. In your adulthood you should also continue to relate to other animals, people and children. Keeping them trapped and isolated for long, without opportunity and socializing, breeds aggressive dogs.

On the other hand it is very important to note that they need frequent companionship and may develop destructive habits and even separation-related disorders when they are isolated for prolonged periods. This type of ducts are common in dogs that reside permanently in the garden.

This dog is not usually aggressive, but can act with great determination and ferocity when he has to defend his from some attack. Due to its impressive size it is a good deterrent dog, which makes it a good guardian although they are generally totally harmless.

New Earth Health

As with all races, Newfoundland is likely to suffer from some of the genetic diseases we explain below. It is important to point out that the probability of suffering from them is due mainly to the bad practices of the breeders, such as reproducing direct relatives, but we may also encounter some hereditary disease that did not manifest itself in the parents. The most common diseases are:

It will be essential to go to the veterinarian every 6 months and follow the schedule of vaccines that it indicates. In addition, we should also pay attention to the deworming , internal and external, with proper regularity, especially in the summer.
