Physical appearance

It is a strong and large dog. There are two types of Golden Retriever, although with some differences we find the British and the American Canadian . As basic differences we can say that the British has the broadest muzzle, the deepest chest and the shortest tail. It is heavier than its American cousin who has an angulation in the back and a torn eyes. The head is great as is his body, which looks sturdy and athletic.

It has a medium-long hair usually smooth, of golden color and repellent to the water. In Canada we can find darker specimens but all follow a line of clear shades like gold or cream, never red or mahogany.

The Golden Retriever is a friendly, affable and energetic dog . He has a good temperament and mentally it is an agile dog. Very faithful to their owners demonstrates their intelligence, adaptability, docility … And has a great desire to satisfy. All these qualities describe the race and make it unique and special.

They are not just one-person dogs, they are usually kind to strangers and therefore are not often used as guard dogs. In general, they do not show themselves aggressive, shy or hostile.

Like any other breed of dog, you should take it regularly to your veterinary clinic to see if everything is okay and the necessary vaccines are given. They suffer from some genetic disorders and other diseases such as:

  • Hip or elbow dysplasia
  • Obesity and overweight
  • Cancer
  • Cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy

Most of these diseases develop in older specimens, yet we must be aware of the health of our Golden Retriever and be careful with their food because they are very greedy and will do everything in their power to get them to reward them.

The Golden can adapt to living in an apartment or a house without problems. What is critical is getting your required exercise dose divided into three daily walks . It is a very active dog.

The Golden Retriever’s hair will need brushing a couple of times a week, and we should offer greater care in times of hair changes (spring and fall). The bath should be every 2 or 3 months, so we advise you to look for long-lasting pipettes.

The food should be balanced and according to the exercise that the dog performs, will always have to have fresh and abundant water to drink.

Like any and every dog, the Golden Retriever should be socialized with people and animals from an early age. They do not need a complex education such as other races that need a more experienced leader. Golden will be willing to obey without problems. It adapts perfectly to the coexistence with children and other animals .

Except for occasional cases, Golden is usually a good, docile dog.

It is classified in number 4 of the most intelligent races according to Stanley Coren. If you adopt a Golden Retriever as a pet and dedicate time and constancy, you will have a dog at your side who will know how to perform various orders and tasks.

Golden is a dog that besides its wonderful character will bring us the will to interact. This breed enjoys several daily activities especially if they receive some kind of reward. Swimming, picking up the newspaper or games with different dolls will exercise both your physique and your mind.

It is a good dog for activities such as Agility , the help of people with physical disabilities , do therapeutic or recovery functions and even drug sniffers .
