Origin of Fox Paulistinha

The history of this breed is little known and controversial. Some authors say that Fox Paulistinha is a descendant of the smooth- haired Fox Terrier dogs brought from Europe to Brazil and crossed with local dogs from Brazilian farms (this is the official version of the breed). Other authors say that the true ancestor of this dog is the Jack Russell Terrier . And there are also those who think that both the Fox Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier have been crossed with local dogs from Brazil to give rise to this breed.

Regardless, the Brazilian Terrier is a very popular dog in Brazil that is used as companion dog, small game and guard dog . Although very popular in his homeland, he is little known outside Brazil and is often confused with other terrier breeds.

Physical characteristics of Fox Paulistinha

In male Brazilian terriers, the height at the withers ranges from 35 to 40 centimeters. In females it goes from 33 to 38 centimeters. According to the FCI standard, the maximum weight , regardless of whether it is a male or female, is 10 kilograms.

The body of Fox Paulistinha is proportional and has a square structure. That is, it is equal both height and width. Despite this, its lines are curved and well defined, unlike the Fox Terrier whose body follows straight lines.

Seen from above, the head of the Brazilian Terrier is triangular, with the base broad and the ears well separated from each other. The head narrows considerably from the eyes to the tip of the nose which is moderately large, dark and has large nasal cavities. The muzzle is strong and well formed and has thin, tight lips. The eyes are round, large and prominent, they should be as dark as possible, but not necessarily black. Blue-colored dogs have blue-gray eyes, while brown dogs have brown, green, or blue eyes. The Brazilian Terrier’s ears are triangular and end in tip. They are lateral insertion and semi-erect, with the tip falling to the outer angle of the eye.

The tail is low in insertion and its tail does not reach lower than the hock. The dog can take it high, but without being bent over the back. Unfortunately, it is common habit to amputate the tail, and although the breed standard accepts dogs with whole tails, it also accepts mutilated puppies.

The hair of these dogs is short, thin and smooth , but not soft. It is so dense and tight that you can not see the skin through it. The standard of the race makes reference to this characteristic indicating that the hair of Fox Paulistinha is “like that of the rats”.

The predominant color is white, with black, blue or brown marks. In addition, there are some brands of colors that are always present in dogs of this breed:

  • Fire color over the eyes, on both sides of the muzzle, inside the ears and the edge of the ears.
  • Black, brown or blue markings on forehead and ears.

Character of the Fox Paulistinha

The Brazilian Terrier is a cheerful, vivacious, curious, intelligent and very independentdog . This terrier does not miss any noise or movement, and is always alert to everything. Besides being an alert dog, he has a very good temperament and spends a lot of time playing, even when he is no longer a puppy.

Despite their good character towards theirs, these dogs are usually reserved with strangers and may even become aggressive dogs . Therefore, it is very important the correct socialization of dogs with people from an early age.

Also they are usually aggressive with other dogs and pets, reason why it is important to socialize them from puppies . It is not advisable to have a little Paulistinha with small pets because his hunting instinct is very strong and usually chase and kill small animals. However, it can get along well with dogs that have been raised since childhood, as long as it has been socialized correctly, both the Brazilian Terrier and the other dogs.

Care of the Fox Paulistinha

The hair of these dogs is short and easy to care for. Regular brushing is usually sufficient once or twice a week, and bathing only when needed.

In contrast, the exercise that Fox Paulistinha needs is very high and can be a difficulty for sedentary and quiet people. In addition to daily walks, the Brazilian Terrier needs intense play and fun dressing to keep him occupied both physically and mentally.

The Brazilian Terrier is a very independent animal and does not need as much company as other dogs. However, it is also not a dog that should spend long periods alone, because when it is bored tries to create some occupation on its own, usually destroying furniture and decorations.

Although it is small in size, this dog is not very suitable for living in an apartment unless you have enough time to provide you with long walks and plenty of exercise . Ideally, live indoors, but have a garden where you can play and burn calories when you are alone.

Education of Fox Paulistinha

As far as canine training is concerned, the Brazilian Terrier is best if you understand the principles of learning or a disaster if you use traditional methods of training. This dog easily learns both good and bad behavior, and any attempt to force it through is useless. On the other hand, the clicker training or other styles based on positive reinforcement achieve excellent results.

Being a Terrier so active, the Fox Paulistinha can present behavior problems depending on where to live. The most characteristic are: excessive barking, digging the garden , destroying things and aggression towards other pets. When you get bored you’re usually a dog that destroys .

However, these problems are not an impediment to this dog being an excellent pet, whenever your basic requirements are met. If you provide exercise (rides and intense games), your hyperactive character can be channeled into acceptable activities. It is not an ideal pet for small children as it may bite in reaction to the unintentional maltreatment it receives.

Health of the Fox Paulistinha

This is a very healthy breed and is not prone to particular diseases . But this is not a license to neglect the care and health of the dog. Like any other dog, the Brazilian Terrier must receive the respective vaccines according to their vaccination schedule and the veterinary care they need. You should go to the vet every 6 months just to confirm that you do not have any health problems and that’s okay.
