History of the Airedale Terrier

The Airedale Terrier originated in England about 100 years ago. This breed first appeared in the Aire valley, and was originally used for smaller game hunting (mainly to get rid of bicharada). The Airedale was originally named the Waterside Terrier, and given its great qualities as a hunting dog, ways were sought to improve the breed for this activity. In this search, crosses were made between Waterside Terriers and Otterhounds , to give the breed greater capacity for swimming.

Over time, and when the breed name had already established itself as an Airedale Terrier, it began to use these dogs in different activities: smaller hunting, larger hunting, guides for the blind, police dogs, search and rescue dogs, etc. . Nowadays, the Airedale Terrier performs few of these functions, but the vocation of work still persists in this breed so noble, versatile and elegant.

Airedale Terrier Features

The Airedale Terrier has a compact, muscular body that is usually square, but may be slightly wider than tall. The chest is deep but not broad. The head of this dog is elongated and has calvaria flat. The stop is not pronounced and can not be seen at first glance. The Airedale Terrier’s jaws are powerful, strong and muscled, but should not be too muscled so that the cheeks have a rounded appearance. The teeth are strong and close in a powerful scissor bite. The neck is muscular, without gills and both its length and width are moderate.

The tail is strong and high insertion. During the action the Airedale has it raised, but never bent over the loin. The cut tail is accepted, but this trend is rapidly losing its adepts due to the cruelty it represents. In some countries tail-cutting for aesthetic reasons is illegal, so dogs should have a full tail.

The ears of the Airedale Terrier are small, but not disproportionate to the head. They are V-shaped and the section where they bend is slightly above the calvaria.

This Terrier has a double : a hard outer one that forms the so-called “wire”, and a sub by the short and soft. The coat of the Airedale should be dense. Although the hard hair of this breed usually forms ripples, it should never curl. The accepted color for this canine breed is black and fire (brown). The dorsal part of the dog, from the neck to the tail, should be black or dark gray. The rest must be of fire color, accepting different shades. Some white hairs on the chest are accepted.

The height at the withers ranges from 58 to 61 centimeters for males. For females, the height at the withers should be between 56 and 59 centimeters. The average weight of the Airedale Terrier is between 23 and 29 pounds for males. For females, the weight is between 18 and 20 kilos.

Airedale Terrier Character

The Airedale Terrier is a cheerful, confident, courageous and intelligent dog . Usually he is friendly with people and also with other dogs, but needs a good socialization since the puppy. This dog is impulsive and usually exhibits intense prey behaviors. Therefore, it is necessary to train him since he is a puppy, although it is always preferable to train without mistreatment or attempts at domination.

Due to its intelligent and physical strength, the Airedale Terrier is an excellent candidate to participate in canine sports. One can perform very well in any sport of puppies including Agility, Canine Freestyle, Schutzhund and others.

Its character makes this dog a great collaborator in the hunt, since it is not afraid of the prey, in addition it has already been used for hunting larger (although there are races more suitable for this task). The courage of the Airedale Terrier makes this dog an excellent guardian and protector.

Although this breed is very versatile, it needs a lot of physical and mental exercise. That’s why an Airedale can be a bit gruff to play with small children and dogs that are not used to playing hard.

Airedale Terrier Care

The Airedale needs a lot of exercise , so it’s not advisable to live in a small apartment. It is necessary to have at least one garden or an average patio to play. In addition, long daily walks are accurate for your correct socialization and to help you burn calories. Play as a means of training is often very useful.

Even if you have a garden, you need to walk it daily and have a daily play time, it is possible that the Airedale needs more exercise, especially during the first three years of life. So it’s good to take him to the field or practice some dynamic canine sport like Agility .

Hair is a subject of conflict for anyone who has an Airedale but not enough time to take care of it. The Airedale Terrier’s hair needs frequent brushing , but also needs specific care on a regular basis. It is best to take it to a canine hairdresser a couple of times a year and brush it regularly. It is important to clean your beard often to avoid leftover food. If you have an Airedale for exposure, hair care should be done by a specialist and more often.

Education of the Airedale Terrier

As we said, education of the Airedale Terrier should begin as soon as possible, when it is still a puppy, to initiate a correct socialization of the dog that allows him to relate well with people , pets and the environment in which he lives. Providing you with different positive experiences will help prevent future behavior problems. The exercise is also extremely important for this same feed, otherwise, can develop destructive habits and excitable. Intelligence games are a good option.

The compliance can be a bit tricky but with patience and the use of positive reinforcement , the Airedale Terrier learn the basic commands of obedience and education that should keep at home. Before we mentioned Agility as a sport that also stimulates your intelligence, recommended in this race.

Airedale Terrier Health

This breed is usually very resistant and presents few health problems. However, attention should be paid to eye diseases, skin infections and hip dysplasia . The ideal is to prevent these problems before they begin to develop, for this we recommend the following:

  • Although it is a dog that needs a lot of physical exercise, it is advisable not to force it since this can cause the premature appearance of hip and elbow dysplasia.
  • A high quality food based on fish and rice rations will help prevent skin problems besides offering supplements like omega 3 and 6 that will give you a great shine in your hair.
  • We should pay attention to your facial cleansing by removing potholing, leftover food and accumulated dirt. In the canine hairdresser it is essential to ask the professional to find a way in these areas.

Finally, be sure to bring him twice a year to the vet as it will help us quickly detect any illness and provide the Airedale with the necessary vaccines .
