Physical appearance

The British Shorthair stands out for its great head that is unmistakable. It has ears rounded and very separated from each other, underneath we can see two big eyes of an intense color in harmony with the hair.

The body is strong and robust, which gives it a very solemn appearance. Next to the short, dense and soft hair we find an elegant cat. Medium in size, somewhat large, the English short haired cat has a majestic floor and lens that finishes in a thick tail at the beginning and thin at the tip.

Although it is more frequent to see the British Shorthair blue, this breed also exists in the following colors :

  • Black, white, blue, red, beige, tricolor, chocolate, lilac, silver, gold, cinnamon and brown.

We can also see different patterns in it :

  • Bicolores, colour point, branco, tortoiseshelltabby (blotched, mackerel, spotted e ticked) assim como broken e marbled.
  • The shaded sometimes can also occur (darker hair tips).

If you are looking for a sweet and affectionate cat , the British Shorthair is perfect for you. He likes to feel loved and for that reason is a little dependent on his owners, whom he follows throughout the house. His cheerful and spontaneous character will undoubtedly surprise you by asking jokes and relating very well with dogs and other cats.

Likes to spend time with the kids since he is an active and playful cat who will like to take care of his muscle tone. It is very likely that in the middle of the joke you will retire to rest in your bed. It’s a very quiet cat.

Here are some of the most common British Shorthair diseases :

  • Kidney failure, is a presenting condition in races that derive from Persian. It is a genetic mutation.
  • Coronavírus.
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
  • Panleucopenia felina.

Avoid that your cat is a victim of diseases such as panleucopenia, always keeping up with the veterinarian’s vaccination schedule. Remember that although your cat does not go out on the street, viruses and bacteria can get to him.

Although the British needs very simple care, the truth is that unlike other breeds will like all the attention he can devote. Follow these tips to have a happy English short haired cat:

  • Provide you with a comfy bed and great for sleeping.
  • We recommend that the food and drink is of a quality, since this has a direct impact on your happiness, on the beautiful and healthy state.
  • We remind you that it is currently prohibited to remove fingernails called declawing . To maintain care of your cat’s nails, you should cut them only once in a while or go to the veterinarian to do this if you can not.
  • Scratches, toys and brushing him from time to time are elements that should not be lacking in the life of any cat.

  • In 1871 the British Shorthair competed for the first time at The Crystal Palace where it broke records of popularities beating the Persian cat.
  • During World War I and II, the English short-haired cat almost died out, so when we talk about the origins of this cat, we speak of the Persian cat, which gave rise to a more robust British Shorthair with rounded shapes, an intense eye color, etc
