What is Bordetella?

The term Bordetella refers to a group of 3 pathogenic bacteria :

  • Bordetella pertussis
  • Bordetella parapertussis
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica

These bacteria can also affect humans and other animals like sheep, however, Bordetella bronchiseptica is very rare in humans but if it is the cause of pathologies in dogs, in this case, the infection by this bacterium manifests itself through a a disease known as kennel cough .

It should be mentioned that in addition to the Bordetella bronchiseptica bacterium, canine Parainfluenza virus and canine Adenovirus type 2 are also associated with the onset of this disease.

Bordetella is a highly contagious bacterium that is transmitted by direct contact or through the air , causing real outbreaks in places where dogs live heaped, such as kennels or refuges, hence the popular name as it is known the pathology caused by Bordetella.

In a healthy dog, the Bordetella can manifest itself simply with cough, on the other hand, in a puppy, the disease caused by this bacterium can become deadly .

Symptoms of Bordetella infection in dogs

The Bordetella bacterium causes canine infectious tracheobronchitis , which is the medical term used to refer to kennel cough.

When a dog is infected by this pathogen produces a manifestation that mainly affects the respiratory apparatus and we can observe in the affected dog the following symptoms:

  • Persistent cough
  • Arcades, vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Expectoration of respiratory secretions

The presence of one or more of these symptoms should alert us and we should try to have the affected dog have veterinary assistance when, before, it is equally important to isolate the affected dog, otherwise the bacterium may propagate in a way very easy.

Treatment of Bordetella in dogs

During treatment the dog should remain isolated. This treatment will be done through antibiotic drugs to combat bacterial colonization and anti-inflammatory drugs that help decrease inflamed respiratory tract tissues.

Adequate hydration and nutrition are also essential factors so that the treatment tells Bordetella to be effective and the dog can recover without any inconvenience.

Canine vaccine against Bordetella

From the 3 weeks of life, a dog can be vaccinated against Bordetella, however, the distribution of this vaccine is not as wide as in other cases and in some geographical areas may not be found. The vaccine can be administered subcutaneously or nasally, the vet can advise you on which is the best option.

The renewal of this vaccine is annual or semi-annual in the case of some adult dogs, and not all dogs need it , being especially indicated when our pet will live with several dogs.
