Physical appearance

It is not difficult to confuse a Border Collie. It is a very agile dog, with an ideal physical form to exercise, jump and run. Males usually measure about 53 centimeters and, in the case of females a little less, as is customary. They can weigh up to 20 kilos and have an elongated body and a very dynamic appearance.

Features a wide range of colors such as black and white, brown and white and black, white and fire. There are also blue, chocolate or red Australian specimens. We can find two types of variants depending on the hair. The long-haired Border is the most common and known, has a double layer of hair and shows one of them in the form of hair fallen on both sides. We also find the Border of short hair , less common, which also has a double layer of hair and although it is of a shorter length it is a very dense coat and thick, resistant to cold.

Sometimes the Border Collie has one eye of each color : blue and brown.

The breed features several very personal characteristics such as muscular legs that are ideal for exercising or finishing the tail end always in white tones. As for the ears we can check three different types like the falls, semi-falls or straight, all of them bring a different touch.

The Border, although not too large, is a dog that should live in a garden house, because the various crosses that resulted in the Border Collie as we know it today were specifically selected for this, to have a very active character and generate energy without Limits.

It is recommended to young people or adults with time, assets, with passion for the sport, the intellectual stimulation of their pet and physical endurance. The full potential of the breed will be benefited by the skills the owner has, and the owner will be rewarded with an obedient, shepherd, neat and tireless dog.

We then speak of a dog that needs time and dedication unlike other, perhaps calmer, breeds. The lack of these elements make our Border Collie a destructive, hyperactive, anxious, nervous and inclusive dog barking in excess. Negative behaviors are a consequence of the anxiety you may feel from lack of energy or annoyance.

These dogs are very loyal to their owners, who observe in an intelligent way and with time understand their way of expressing pain, happiness and excitement. Loving and tender are difficult to open with strangers unless you do.

Due to physical activity and its resistance it is usually a healthy dog, although lack of exercise can even cause up depression. It needs a little more food than the one that comes defined by the weight, so it is important to consult the vet.

With age you can develop hip dysplasia.

As we have already mentioned a few times in the previous paragraphs, it is a very active dog, so we recommend at least 3 daily outings of one hour or 4 outings of 40 minutes each. Combining walking with exercise is the most recommended. In addition to physical exercise it is important to mentally stimulate them . The Border will get tired of performing the same exercises and be rewarded by the same routine of orders. The result is a frustrated puppy. The fun for them is to learn without limits by satisfying their owners and feeling fulfilled.

Both the long and short will need a brushing routine of at least 3 times a week to eliminate the dead hairs and shine as they deserve. The baths should be every month and a half so you do not lose your natural layer of protection.

Any healthy, balanced dog that understands the limits of play with the kids and understands the tranquility they need is perfect for playing with them. We recommend marked goals suchas fetching the ball, circuits or other activity that encourages both the creativity of the child and the stimulation of the dog. You should also teach the little ones how they should treat the house dog and what they should and should not do. This is very important.

When you are a disciplined dog it will be very easy to train him as a shepherd dog, you have a smart dog who will understand that he should not hurt the lambs, but rather direct them. Also amazing is the behavior he takes on with other dogs and pets, and he is respectful of being the leader of the pack for his mental abilities.

Remember that puppy education is always critical.

Unlike many other breeds, a study ensures that the Border Collie takes an average of 5 exercises to learn a new order, while less intelligent dogs may need 30 to 40 reps to show understanding. Obviously this time of learning is very relative because we can not demand if our dog does not have as much capacity. It is important that you learn advanced education orders as well as begin in agility . Learning how to motivate him is very important so we can reward him with different goodies, take them to new places where he can practice or have different toys.

  • The popularity of the Border Collie breed began with Queen Victoria from the UK, Great Britain and Ireland, which had several copies.
  • The Border Collie is ranked 1st in The Intelligent Dogs by Stanley Coren.
  • Chaser, a very smart Border was able to identify 1,022 different types of toys and bring them to their owner’s feet.
