A Brief Overview of the Cat Door

Families with cats often install a cat door for their beloved pets. Some people call these cat flaps. The purpose of a cat flap is to let a cat inside and outside whenever it wants. These pet openings have evolved greatly since the time they were concieved. These days, pet doors are framed with sturdy and versatile plastic or wood. The doors will resist wear and tear caused by the animal using them. Durability and sturdiness are important when considering getting a cat door.

Size and Frame

Always take the breed and size of your cat in consideration when buying a cat door. Some breeds, like the maine coon cat, are larger than average and others are small enough that they lack the strength to push a heavy door. Regardless of the door, the frame should be easily installed, yet resistant enough to last during different types of weather.

The material of the door can be more flexible, with some even being made in glass. Of course, both the door and the frame should be appropriate to the size and the strength of the cat.

Electronic Or Magnetic

These types of cat doors work in coordination with the cat itself. Some doors can detect the approach of the cat through the electronic collar that it’s wearing. This distinction gives the cat the advantage of being the only cat able to go in and out of the cat door. It can save the cat’s life if it’s being chased by dogs or children. However, if the collar breaks down, the cat is stuck outside (or inside) until the owner opens the door for it. Other types of cat doors detect the animal and not the collar that it’s wearing. Since the features of each cat door vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model, it pays to find specific information about them before making a purchasing decision.
