By admin on Jan 14, 2009 in cats
Virtually anyone who possessed an indoor kitty is aware what a pain it is, to take care of a kitty litterbox and clean it whenever it has to be or when the cat demands it. And many owners of house cats have experienced what an even more unnerving task it is if the kitty doesn’t take the litter box! Well, there are many among us always dreaming of more important achievments and do not care to learn more about litter box cleaning. For these kitty owners, there is good news now. Yes, believe it or not, kitties can be trained, to use an actual toilet. When you are toilet training your cat, you will teach it to go ahead and use the toilet instead of the litter box. In case this sounds too good to be true, temper your imagination a little bit with the recognition that you will still have to flush the toilet for your kitty.
1. Changing the Place of Your Kitty’s Litter Box
In case your cat’s litter box is not yet in the bathroom, you will have to place it there. The box should be near the toilet on the floor for some time. Every few days you should put the litter box up some inches using something very stable to sit under it. In case you have no appropriate furniture fitting this description, you can use books if they are arranged in a stable pattern. The goal is, to reach the point where the edge of the litter box and the toilet bowl are on the same level. Only then you should install a sturdy aluminum pan over the toilet bowl in a manner that will support your cat without wobbling as you start the toilet training. You should put less than an inch of kitty litter over the bottom of the pan.
2. How to Get the Cat Used to the new Toilet Seat
Once you have taken away the litter box and have the kitty using the pan only, you are ready to start with the last part of toilet training of your cat. You should begin the training by putting some holes in the surface of one side of the pan. Yes, you better cut back on the cat litter so that it doesn’t leave through the toilet. And, you should think on using flushable kitty litter at this time. The holes will direct your cat to stand with its front paws on the toilet seat as it potties. After your cat has been doing this for several days, you should put holes on the opposite side of the pan so that the cat will stand entirely on the toilet seat. The difficult step of the toilet training is that you have to take away the pan after your kitty got used doing this with success for some time. If you are a successful cat instructor, your cat should from now on take the bathroom toilet!
A Last Word on Toilet Training your Cat
These 2 lessons may last as long as two to three months time with a stubborn, senior cat. So be patient with your feline companion. Always remember water isn’t something cats are usually comfortable around. Don’t give up if your cat does not want to use the new toilet every time it has to go. You should keep your pan in case your cat is against it or is just not in the mood using the toilet. You can simply put the pan back on the toilet and the cat can re-learn to use the toilet again pretty fast. The benefits of toilet training your cat are many.
